How to Repair Drafty Windows- Windows are great for letting in light and using the warmth from the sun to naturally heat your home. Although newer windows offer great ways of saving energy, windows that are older than 15 years old can be a great loss of heating and air conditioning as well.

Repairing drafty windows involves several ways you can save some cash on your utility bills. You don't have to be an expert to insulate windows or even change out an old drafty window.

Insulating around the window frame: This is a step that builders usually don't do a good job with. Around the frame of your window, there is usually a gap between the outside of the window frame and the house framing. This gap can be 1/2" to up to 1" or more and is gobler of your warm or cool air. To repair this use these simple steps:

Hammer
Small Pry Bar
Screwdriver
Work Gloves
Facial Mask
Small amount of Fiberglass insulation
Finish Nails
Trim Paint
Paint Brush

Step 1: Carefully remove the casing around the window on the inside by gently prying it from the wall. Don't push to hard on the pry bar or you will make a hole in the wall. Start at the top, you can lean on the wall a little more here because most homes have a header in this area.
Step 2: Once the molding is removed, put your mask and gloves on and get your fiberglass insulation and remove it from the paper backing and use long thin strips and stuff it in the space between the window frame and the house framing. Be sure not to overstuff this, you may hamper the operation of the window and DO NOT use expanding spray foam.
Step 3: Tap out the finish nails on the mouldings and replace them back to their original position. Touch up any paint chips and you are done.

Average time to complete: 20-45 minutes per window.

Other Options:
Shrink film can be used on windows that are drafty. These kits are sold in local hardware and home improvement centers and include the instructions for use.

Hot Spots; You may have windows that heat a room up and increase your cost of air conditioning. You can use a window tint to help cool down the area.

Replacing a window: If you are planning on replacing a window, while you have the casing off, measure the rough opening (this is the area that the window sits inside the framing) and you can now either order a window or pick one up at your local home improvement store. You will want to leave a gap of 1/2" to 1" all the way around.

Blinds and Curtains: Drafty windows can be controled with heavy insulated curtains as well. You can buy them pre-made or buy the material and sew them yourself. Room darkening blinds provide protection against harsh sunlight and heat.
